MEDIA RELEASE: SWG Capital appoints Dave Sharma as Partner

Steven Muller

(Sydney, 06 June 2023) - Corporate advisory and principal investment firm SWG Capital, today announced the appointment of former Federal MP and Ambassador to Israel, Dave Sharma as Partner.

Sharma joins Andrew Silberberg and Jeremy Waine, who have over 50 combined years of corporate advisory and industry experience. The appointment of Sharma further strengthens the firm's offering and expertise across capital raising, financial services and global markets.

SWG Capital has a strong track record of successful strategic and corporate finance advice. Since inception, SWG Capital has helped spin out a genomics technology company, Sequins, from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research; supported Sinorbis, an Asia-focused digital marketing company, with strategic guidance and to support its recent capital raise; and partnered with Traffyk.ai, a data-driven employee communications solution, to help grow its business and attract investors.

SWG Capital is currently advising early-stage businesses in fintech, biotech, travel tech and the circular economy. Dave’s extensive networks in Australia and overseas will be used to support business development, access new investors and strategic partners, and provide strategic advice to clients on public policy, regulatory frameworks and geopolitical risk.

SWG Capital will also focus on biotech and life sciences, and early-stage industrials, believing these verticals will prove more resilient in the face of a tougher business environment.

Silberberg, Waine and Sharma have extensive experience across corporate advisory, capital structuring, corporate strategy and capital raising, ranging from early-stage ventures to advising leading ASX-listed and global companies.

As well as his extensive experience in politics, diplomacy and foreign affairs, Sharma has significant commercial experience and a wide network. He has worked closely with the technology sector and was the chairman of Shekel Brainweigh, an Israeli technology company.

Long-time friends and now colleagues, Sharma is delighted to join Silberberg and Waine in his new appointment which took effect last month.

"I am looking forward to playing an active part in helping Australian companies grow and succeed in a competitive and challenging domestic and global landscape," says Sharma, adding "In particular, it is critical to Australia's international competitiveness and future prosperity that we support a thriving and well-developed technology sector."

Sharma represented the seat of Wentworth from 2019 to 2022 in the Australian Parliament, following a successful career as an Australian diplomat and national security professional. He was Australia's Ambassador to Israel from 2013 to 2017 and held key roles at Australian diplomatic missions in Washington DC and Papua New Guinea. He also served in critical foreign policy positions within the Australian public service.

Following his diplomatic career, Dave worked in the technology sector with a number of early stage, innovative companies, advising them on entering the Australian market, helping them raise capital, navigating regulatory and political hurdles, and improving strategy and governance. Dave was first chair of digital retail technology company Shekel Brainweigh and served on the advisory boards of a number of defence, ag-tech, medical and autonomous vehicle companies, and was a consultant to the Victorian State Government and the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the board of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

“Dave is highly qualified in foreign affairs and international relations, with a wealth of experience at senior levels in technology companies,” says Silberberg.

“Dave Sharma’s experience means he has very strong and deep networks, domestically and overseas, which will be of benefit to our clients and will very much complement our existing relationships with industry leaders as well as multiple capital sources, including family offices, institutional investors, industry partners and strategic corporate investors.” he said.

SWG Capital has a strong track record in corporate advisory, including several recent successful capital raisings for high-growth companies. SWG Capital is also an active principal investor in its own right and always welcomes the opportunity to hear from high quality companies that are seeking capital.
